LAB SPECIALIST

The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for two Lab Specialists in the Doney Lab. Our mission is to advance understanding of the environment through interdisciplinary scientific research, education, and service. For more information about the Department of Environmental Sciences, please go to https://evsc.as.virginia.edu/mission-statement.

The successful candidates will be expected to contribute to computational research on ocean and atmosphere biogeochemistry using data analysis, remote sensing, and numerical modeling techniques. The candidates will work directly with Professor Scott Doney in the Department of Environmental Sciences. Qualified candidates must have a background with oceanographic or atmospheric data sets and models is preferred.    Ability to use advanced statistical data analysis software such as Matlab, R or SciPy, verbal and written communication abilities, ability to work as a member of a team, and ability to organize and complete tasks. The Lab Specialists will report to Scott Doney, Joe D & Helen J Kington Professor of Environmental Sciences. Please visit the job advertisement for more details.

Postdoctoral Opportunities

The NSF Center for Chemical Currencies of a Microbial Planet (C-CoMP) invites applications for 2-year postdoctoral fellowships that will significantly advance the Center’s goal of promoting an understanding of the chemicals and microbial processes that underlie the surface ocean carbon cycle. C-CoMP’s research agenda includes experimental approaches, systems-based modeling from cellular to global scales, and data mining and integration strategies. Visit the C-CoMP Postdoctoral Fellowship webpage to learn more!

Bridge-to-PhD Fellowship

Our Bridge-to-PhD program supports the transition of students with undergraduate degrees and an interest in research careers into ocean science graduate programs. Each year, 4-5 new B2P fellows are welcomed into C-CoMP research groups. The 2-year, paid fellowship program provides sufficient time for students to establish core competencies in their relevant fields while benefiting from tailored mentoring and professional development. Fellows are chosen through an application process that prioritizes applicants from backgrounds historically excluded from the sciences. They will work in science disciplines ranging from marine chemistry to microbial ecology to data science by matching their disciplinary interests with C-CoMP faculty, and carry out research aligned with the science objectives of the Center. Visit the Bridge-to-PhD Fellowship webpage to learn more!

Faculty Fellow Program

The C-CoMP Faculty Fellowship provides one month of salary ($40K, including benefits and institutional indirect costs) during the grant year to support research and networking activities that advance C-CoMP’s mission in a manner consistent with our guiding principles of collaboration coupled with principles of equity and inclusion. C-CoMP promotes a deeper understanding of the chemicals and chemical processes that underpin ocean ecosystems and the global carbon cycle. Our research agenda includes experimental approaches, systems-based modeling from cellular to global scales, data mining and integration strategies, and formal education research. Faculty Fellows are expected to participate in C-CoMP meetings and working groups, and are encouraged to contribute to C-CoMP’s goal to broaden participation in the ocean sciences. For example, Faculty Fellows are eligible to act as hosts for Bridge-to-PhD Fellows. Please visit the Faculty Fellowship Program webpage to learn more!
